Amelia activity
Fred Seely’s column
Lots of things happening on Amelia Island with every course situation in some form of turmoil:

    • The city is preparing to dump the golf course and has Request For Proposals out. They previously leased the marina to a private company and we hear the airport is next. Jacksonville Beach architect Bobby Weed appears to be the frontrunner but pro Scott Womble also is bidding.

    • Amelia River, originally built as Royal Amelia, had been run by the Amelia Island Plantation ownership group but they put it back on the Bank of South Carolina. Now, Davis Love’s organization is running it, and it’s strictly a public course. Good move: retaining pro Barry Richardson.

    • The Plantation sale is getting close and the next big date is August 23, when the court has an auction. The probable buyer — pending an agreement with the property owners’ association — is an Atlanta-based company. There hasn’t been much positive news on the island golf scene for some time but residents see some light now.

    • Long Point will be managed by The Heritage Group, a California company that owns and operates courses, mostly in the Southeast.

Welcome to the Tiger-free zone

No more Tiger, no matter what shows up next. While we're at it, let's vote Andre Agassi off the island, too, for his lowlife bookselling efforts.

Bud Cauley is the best young golfer who lives here but doesn't play here (lives at Ponte Vedra, plays national events, a soph at the U. of Alabama) and he's reportedly heading to the pro level after this school year.

He's the nation's No. 2 ranked collegian behind Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State.

The Clay County Classic lost its title sponsor when the Reinhold folks pulled out but it didn't take long for a replacement to show up with a check, so so thank anyone from Whitley Steel when you see them.

San Jose probably has the best member golf program of any club here and it's going to get better after the first of the year when the new general manager moves in. He's Roscoe "Rocky" Staples, who comes over from Deerwood. Staplesis a fine player, a USGA official and a close pal of San Jose pro Todd Bork. Plus, a good GM.

If you're wondering why you haven't seen Laura Philo Diaz scores in LPGA events lately, be advised that baby no. 2 is on the way in February, and she and Kevin are awaiting the birth here.

Expect changes at The Golf Channel when Comcast takes over. The cable giant is buying the channel from General Electric and you can expect more lively programming.

Can we ban those painters hats on golf courses?

A good outcome of the recent PGA Tour Q-school was seeing J.P.Hayes get his card. Remember last year, when he called a penalty on himself that resulted in being DQ'd? Just in case you're wondering, David Duval finished 90th and Bubba Dickerson withdrew.

The mid-year college rankings show Florida's men third, FSU fifth and UNF 25th. Florida's women are 11th; FSU's 27th.

* * *

Former Jacksonville U. star Russell Knox didn't get out of the second round of Q-School and he's back on the minitours.

A recent junior girls tournament in Gainesville featured two famous fathers. Ex-tennis champ Ivan Lendl and famed golf instructor David Leadbetter were there to watch their kids.
