Amelia activity
Fred Seely’s column
Lots of things happening on Amelia Island with every course situation in some form of turmoil:

    • The city is preparing to dump the golf course and has Request For Proposals out. They previously leased the marina to a private company and we hear the airport is next. Jacksonville Beach architect Bobby Weed appears to be the frontrunner but pro Scott Womble also is bidding.

    • Amelia River, originally built as Royal Amelia, had been run by the Amelia Island Plantation ownership group but they put it back on the Bank of South Carolina. Now, Davis Love’s organization is running it, and it’s strictly a public course. Good move: retaining pro Barry Richardson.

    • The Plantation sale is getting close and the next big date is August 23, when the court has an auction. The probable buyer — pending an agreement with the property owners’ association — is an Atlanta-based company. There hasn’t been much positive news on the island golf scene for some time but residents see some light now.

    • Long Point will be managed by The Heritage Group, a California company that owns and operates courses, mostly in the Southeast.

Good day, Good purpose
FRED SEELY, GOLF NEWS EDITOR
Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Congrats to the JAGA leaders and Ponte Vedra for another good Bill Black Memorial event on Monday. The money goes to help local kids with college payments, a good thing in itself, but the day also brings together a lot of our golf leaders.

With the way things are going, everyone seems to have battened down, and what we need are more times to get together and discuss problems, and maybe come up with some ideas.

Good weekend for locals on the tours. Sophie Gustafson won the LPGA tournament and Matt Kuchar won on the PGA Tour. Gustafson is married to PGA Tour exec Ty Votaw; Kuchar is a frequent visitor to his folks' place at the Plantation Country Club.

Politicians look for all sorts of ways to raise money and our Rep. Ander Crenshaw includes a golf tournament. The 4th annual Crenshaw Invitational at Amelia National is Oct. 19 and you'll have a fun day for your $250.

Ander is a pretty good golfer, too. If he were able to spend more time at the game, he'd easily be a single-digit handicapper.

Info is at 398-2345.

Another good win for one of our lads: M.J. Maguire took the very good Chapman Invitational at Spartanburg, S.C. He won in a playoff after shooting 67-68-135 on a tough course.

It's maddening to have to hunt results of good area players, and you'll have to hunt through the USGA website to find out that Gainesville's Buddy Alexander got bumped in the second round of the Senior Amateur at Chicago, and that Gainesville's John Darr was bounced in the first round. Jacksonville's Wes Paxson III didn't make the 64-man match play field.

The Tours are in their full sales modes to wrap up the 2010 seasons and maybe things won't be as bad as once projected. The PGA Tour hasn't lost any more sponsors and the bleeding has been lessened at the LPGA.

In fact, next year's schedule might be pretty close to this year's for the PGA Tour, and someone needs to get a raise for that hard work.

The LPGA? They've lost Anheuser-Busch but there are several new names looking at a chance to get an event.

On the local side, it looks like the Players will retain the big-buck boys, while losing a few smaller sponsors.

Please, LPGA. Get a commissioner. The players deserve it.

And, while the board is at it, why don't they all write a resignation letter with the effective date of the new commissioner's first day?

Blame ex-Commissioner Carolyn Bivins all you want, and she deserves plenty of blame, but the board members had plenty of veto power.

The new commish will be challenged to make a fresh start and he doesn't need any remiders of the old days.
