Sea Island sale coming?
Fred Seely's column
The financial position of Sea Island is starting to emerge and the resort may have to be sold. A major investment house predicts it's probable that the place will be sold in pieces for no more than 50 cents on the dollar.

Two of the company's golf courses - Frederica and Ocean Forest - have been taken over and the debt load remains large as a result of massive spending to renovate lodging and golf facilities in recent years. The company has announced that it will hire an investment bank to review its "strategic options," a term that likely indicates a sale.

Caught up in this is the Synovus Financial Corporation, which has banks in this area. Bank execs and Sea Island Chairman and CEO Bill Jones III had a close relationship including serving on each other's board, and the bank reportedly is in the tank for over $250 million in loans.

Angered members in the Atlanta area held a tense meeting with Jones recently, wanting to know how-in-heck a bank owns the Ocean Forest course that they live on.

They got few reasons but you can guess: business is lousy in this economic climate and it hasn't been helped by too-high room and golf rates. Sea Island always has been expensive, but rates used to be low enough for a splurge. When the "new" Cloisters hotel opened, rooms were in the $800 range.

Why not Bubba?
Fred Seely's column

Things to consider as we head into the new year: • The World Golf Hall of Fame puts on a dandy show but it lacks one thing: actors you want to see. Alas, the cast of characters eligible to join the St. Augustine locker room isn't very star-studded (Lanny Wadkins got in last year; so did Jose Maria Olazabel.) They need to pep it up so here's a vote for Bill Clinton (never thought I'd vote for him, either.) He's an avid golfer who seemed to connect with the average guy rather than playing the elite circuit. There are several reasons why he'll be considered: PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem is a fellow left-winger and somehow the Bill Clinton Foundation got between $50,000 and $100,000 from the PGA Tour last year. So, it's a favor to Tim, and it's a return favor from the ex-President. >> Read Full Story

Marital bliss on the Tour?

I took my sister-in-law to the airport last week and one of our very prominent pro golfers was in the car ahead. He unloaded his clubs and a big suitcase from the trunk and kissed his wife goodbye, and gave her a long hug. Not an unfamiliar scene at any airport or involving any couple. But this had to be a bit different, maybe a lot different. >> Read Full Story

The 'new' Bay Hill

It may be Florida's second best-known course and you'll see a different look when it's back on television in the spring. Cheating makes the headlines
FRED SEELY, GOLF NEWS EDITOR
Friday, September 18, 2009
Have you caught anyone cheating? If so, what did you do about it? The appearance of cheating made headlines this week at the Amelia Invitational. A competitor was accused of improving his lie (“improving” is an understatement; he allegedly kicked it 10 feet) by two other competitors and it was such as big deal that it consumed 11 paragraphs of a 12-paragraph tournament report in the newspaper, even though everyone involved was far out of contention. >> Read Full Story
